James’ previous experience includes volunteering at the City Employment Law Clinic, which provides pro bono employment law advice. Prior to this, James gained experience at a leading tech consultancy.

Alongside his studies, James was president of the Oxford University Bar Society. He also founded and edited the Oxford University Bar Society’s magazine, and wrote articles on legal topics for a variety of publications. In 2022, he was a runner-up in the Times Law Awards, judged by senior members of the judiciary and the editor of the Times, for his essay rejecting privatisation in the criminal justice system. In addition, his article on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 won Legal Cheek’s ‘Journal Contribution of the Year 2022’.
