Rebekah Hummerstone is instructed as a leading or sole junior to prosecute and defend in all areas of crime, including; terrorism, fraud, serious violence, armed robbery and sexual and drug offences.

Rebekah also undertakes professional discipline work and has experience of coroner’s inquests. She is currently instructed as part of the senior counsel team to the Inquiry for the Undercover Policing Inquiry.

Rebekah accepts instructions on a direct access basis for all areas of her practice.

Expertise

Criminal Defence

Rebekah is regularly instructed to defend in cases involving serious violence and sexual offences. Rebekah has a particular skill in cases involving young or vulnerable defendants or witnesses.

Cases

R v AD

Defended a teenager charged with four others on two counts of attempted murder after a stabbing in a Peterborough Park.  Rebekah’s client was acquitted of both attempted murder and possession of a knife and convicted of wounding with intent.

R v MKS

Defended a young adult with severe learning difficulties charged with attempted murder after stabbing a male in Costa coffee shop having pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.  Rebekah’s client acquitted of attempted murder.

R v BF

Defended a US serviceman charged with rape and serious sexual assault. Rebekah’s client acquitted of all charges.

R v Barot

Defended an adult defendant charged with multiple rapes of a child with severe learning difficulties.

R v B

Defended 17 year old defendant with learning limitations accused of the rape and sexual assault of two youths with significant learning difficulties.

R v YA

Defended a 16 year old charged with conspiracy to rob, robberies which left the victims with life-limiting injuries.

Inquests

Rebekah was instructed as junior on behalf of the Metropolitan Police in the inquest arising from the 7/7 bombing. She also appeared in the inquest following the repatriation of those who died in the 9/11 attack in the USA. Rebekah’s other inquest experience includes appearing on behalf of the police in an inquest involving the death of a mentally ill patient who died whilst in secure accommodation.

Public Inquiries

Rebekah is currently instructed as deputy first junior in the counsel team for the Inquiry for the Undercover Policing Inquiry. Rebekah played an active part in the live hearings for Tranche 1 of the Inquiry (undercover policing in the Special Demonstration Squad between 1968 and 1982) and is at presently instructed on Tranche 5 of the Inquiry (other undercover policing) and Module 3 (an examination of current undercover policing practices).

Public Prosecution

Rebekah is a grade 4 prosecutor and appears on the rape and general crime CPS specialist lists.

Cases

R v G and G (2022)

Rebekah prosecuted a husband and wife team for offences of human trafficking and controlling prostitution for gain. The pair had recruited girls from Romania to travel to the UK and work as prostitutes in brothels they ran. While working in the brothels the girls were made to split their earnings with the defendants. The first defendant was additionally charged with raping one of the complainants. Following a 6 week trial involving calling multiple complainants by video link from Romania the defendants were convicted on all counts.

R v TH

Instructed as junior alone to prosecute individual charged death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drugs.

R v PH and RB

Instructed as junior alone to prosecute individuals charged with attempted murder.

R v SD

Instructed as junior alone to prosecute individual charged with rape and sexual activity with child family members.

Operation Pescara

Instructed as led junior to prosecute individuals charged with carbon credit fraud on elderly investors.

R v SC and SD

Instructed as junior alone to prosecute case involving controlling child prostitution and arranging child prostitution.

R v A and others

Instructed as prosecution junior in 6 handed gang-related murder by stabbing.

R v T and others

Instructed by the prosecution to prosecute 4 handed case involving allegations of kidnap, false imprisonment and blackmail.

Operation Theseus

Instructed as a junior over a period of 4 years to advise the CPS as to whether charges should be brought against various individuals identified after a complex and lengthy police investigation following the Butterfield Review into the collapse of criminal prosecutions of offences involving London City Bond.
