Members of 2 Hare Court have been involved in some of the most significant international criminal work of recent times, including acting for the prosecution in the decade-long corruption investigation in the Turks and Caicos Islands, for former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on his appeal to the Malaysian Supreme Court and for Dr Agnes Taylor (the ex-wife of the former President of Liberia) in her trial for torture.
In Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, 2 Hare Court has acted for the DPP in the £1.2bn NAMA fraud and corruption investigation, for the alleged ‘Omagh bomber’ in his trial at Belfast Crown Court and in terrorism appeals before the High Court in Dublin.
Members regularly prosecute and defend in high-profile criminal cases in the Cayman Islands and act as Legal Advisors to the Attorney-General of Singapore, the Government of the Cayman Islands, the Law Officers of Jersey and the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Isle of Man.
In addition to advising the CPS and SFO on multi-national prosecutions involving offences and suspects abroad, members advise on UK criminal and regulatory matters with complex jurisdictional issues. Chambers has extensive experience in co-ordinating legal teams across multiple jurisdictions, advising on requests for mutual legal assistance and in representing private prosecutors based abroad.
Members of 2 Hare Court advise businesses that, before February 2022, supplied significant quantities of goods and services to Russia as well as individuals navigating the severance of relationships with sanctioned Russian persons. Highlights include advising on a multi-jurisdictional investigation into terrorist financing in the art market, advising on a £7bn asset restraint case arising from the ‘rebranding’ of Russian oil and providing representation in the first UK criminal prosecution for breaches of Russian sanctions.
Chambers has a wealth of experience in advising on the application of export controls concerning WMD and proliferation risks. Members have led corporate investigations into potential breaches of dual-use export controls and engaged with enforcement authorities for the purpose of voluntary self-disclosure and negotiating compound penalties as an alternative to prosecution. Highlights include representing a UK entity for breaches of the Chemical Weapons Convention and advising numerous UK and foreign businesses and individuals on the export of goods, services and technology to Russia, China and Iran.
Members have represented numerous foreign judicial authorities in extradition proceedings in the UK and regularly advise individuals abroad (facing extradition back to the UK – ‘imports’) and individuals in the UK (facing extradition abroad – ‘exports’). 2 Hare Court has extensive experience in forming partnerships with foreign lawyers and in advising individuals concerned about travel arrangements where an Interpol Notice may have been issued.
