We were delighted to attend the Chambers UK Bar Awards 2023 this year where our congratulations go to Orlando Pownall KC who accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Orlando Pownall KC is a member of and former Head of 2 Hare Court Chambers. He was called to the Bar in 1975 and has practiced exclusively in the Criminal Courts. In 1990, after over a decade of defending almost exclusively, he was appointed Junior Treasury Counsel. He was appointed First Senior Treasury Counsel in 2000 and made Silk in 2002. Over the years he has both defended in and prosecuted a number of celebrated cases and is unique in having both prosecuted the IRA in London and successfully defended the alleged IRA Omagh bomber. He also represented Michael Stone, an alleged Loyalist Paramilitary. He prosecuted the first trial of Barry George charged with the murder of Jill Dando. He has represented a number of sporting figures such as the cricketer Chris Cairns, Gary Neville’s father and Adam Johnson. Most recently he defended the CFO of Balli Steel who was charged with fraudulent trading. He is a Bencher of the Inner Temple.

“He is just incredibly charismatic and very distinguished.” – Chambers UK 2024

The awards recognise a Chambers pre-eminence in the UK. They also reflect achievements over the past 12 months including outstanding work, impressive strategic growth and excellence in client service. They honour the work of sets and individuals across the country based on the research for the recent edition of Chambers UK Bar.

The awards were held on Thursday 30th November at The Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane and the full list of nominations and winners can be seen here.
