Martin Heslop QC appeared at Maidstone Crown Court this week representing clients in an alleged multi-million pound cocaine, cannabis and amphetamine smuggling conspiracy. The trial came after a 19 month undercover police operation. Heslop cross-examined the key undercover officer in respect of disclosure and matters affecting his credibility. As a result, the Crown sought to resist disclosure and made a four day public interest immunity application in an attempt to withhold certain material from being provided to the defence. The trial judge rejected that application. The Crown chose not to disclose the material despite the judge’s ruling.
In consequence, the trial was abandoned and all 10 defendants were acquitted.
Martin was instructed by Luke Gittos of Hughmans Solicitors.
