Criminal Defence

Neelam is currently instructed as sole counsel in matters before the Crown Court involving serious violence, dishonesty, sexual offences, and drugs supply.

Neelam is often instructed in cases involving young/ vulnerable defendants and witnesses; she has recently conducted s28 pre-recorded cross-examination in respect of a sexual allegation made by a 15-year-old boy against his stepfather.

Neelam is regularly instructed in driving matters before the Magistrates’ Court and has successfully argued exceptional hardship and special reasons to avoid disqualification from driving.

Notable Cases:

R v M & Others, Southwark Crown Court (2021): multi-handed conspiracy to defraud and immigration offences centred around a “sham” Bollywood film production company. The trial lasted 16 weeks and involved a high volume of documentary and banking evidence. Led junior.

R v A, Wood Green Crown Court (2021): s18 wounding with intent and s20 unlawful wounding.

R v L, Portsmouth Crown Court (2021): “County Lines” supply of Class A drugs from London to Portsmouth.

R v B, Peterborough Crown Court (2021): Application to dismiss counts of ABH and controlling/ coercive behaviour on the basis that the Crown’s case was wholly reliant on inadmissible hearsay.

R v K, Snaresbrook Crown Court (2021): 22-count indictment which included a series of commercial burglaries, theft, dangerous driving, and assault. The evidence included DNA, cell-site, facial mapping and a large volume of CCTV. After lengthy discussions with the Crown, the defendant pleaded guilty to a heavily reduced indictment and received a suspended sentence.
