Criminal Defence

Neelam is currently instructed to defend in a number of contested matters before the Crown Court including s18 wounding with intent, s20 grievous bodily harm, and supply of Class A drugs. She has identified disclosure issues in a number of cases which led to the prosecution offering no evidence on the day of trial.

Neelam is regularly instructed in driving matters and has successfully argued exceptional hardship and special reasons to avoid disqualification from driving.

Notable Cases:

R v K (2021)

The defendant was charged on a 22-count indictment including multiple counts of non-domestic burglary, theft, dangerous driving and assault. The evidence included DNA, cell-site, facial mapping and a large volume of CCTV. After lengthy negotiations with the Crown, the defendant pleaded guilty to a heavily reduced indictment. He received a suspended sentence notwithstanding that the offences were committed in breach of a previous suspended sentence order.

R v W (2020)

The defendant pleaded guilty to five counts of possession with intent to supply drugs of Class A – C. The Crown submitted that the defendant had a significant role and relied on a high volume of drugs marketing messages sent from the defendant’s personal phone to drug users. The sentencing judge was persuaded that the defendant played a lesser role, having become involved through naivety/ exploitation. He received a suspended sentence.

R v M (2020)

The defendant pleaded guilty to threatening with a blade, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault by beating and criminal damage. The lead offences were committed as a joint enterprise and captured on CCTV. The defendant relied on psychiatric evidence at sentence to establish his suggestibility and distinguish his role from his co-defendant’s. He received a suspended sentence.
