Laura is ranked in Chambers and Partners and the Legal 500 as a leading junior in both professional discipline and inquests and public inquiries. She is adept at tackling cases involving healthcare professionals and complex medical issues, which often traverse her practice areas.

She has extensive experience of public inquiries and large-scale inquests, recently acting as Senior Junior counsel to the UK Covid-19 Inquiry and currently representing a doctor in the Inquests into the Deaths of the Patients of Ian Paterson. She was previously instructed as junior counsel in the Infected Blood Inquiry and worked on behalf of organisations in IICSA and the Hillsborough inquests.  

Laura has a busy coronial practice, representing medical professionals, healthcare providers, government departments and commercial organisations in inquests. She is a member of the Attorney General’s Civil C Panel.

Laura sits as an Assistant Coroner for South London alongside her main practice.

Inquests & Public Inquiries

Laura has extensive working experience of public inquiries and inquests. Laura has recently completed her role as Senior Junior counsel to the UK Covid-19 Inquiry. She advised a national medical organisation in the Nottingham Inquiry and worked as part of the junior counsel team to the Infected Blood Inquiry.

Earlier in her career at the bar, Laura assisted with the review and preparation of evidence and advice for organisations involved in the Hillsborough Inquests and the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse. She acted as disclosure junior for an interested party in the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry.

Laura has a busy inquest practice representing a range of individuals and organisations including doctors, healthcare providers, government departments and commercial organisations. Recent examples of work include:

  • Inquests into the deaths of the patients of Ian Paterson: Instructed to represent the main consultant radiologist, one of several consultant whistleblowers, involved in multiple inquests in these complex and long running proceedings
  • Junior counsel in the death of an 18-year-old Trooper at Hyde Park Barracks, instructed by the Ministry of Defence
  • Representing a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon following the death of a patient from post-operative complications
  • Acting on behalf of a GP who performed a mental health assessment on a patient before the patient jumped from a multi-storey car park
  • Frequently appearing in cases involving prison deaths resulting in long running jury inquests, representing bodies including the Ministry of Justice, NHS healthcare providers, and organisations providing addiction and mental health services

In addition to her main practice, Laura sits part time as an Assistant Coroner at South London Coroner’s Court.

Professional Discipline

Laura is ranked as a leading junior in professional discipline in both the Legal 500 and Chambers UK. She prosecutes and defends in a range of professional disciplinary settings, particularly specialising in healthcare matters.

She is regularly instructed to defend doctors and dentists before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service and General Dental Council. Laura defends doctors in the most serious cases, including those accused of sexual assault against patients and colleagues, financial dishonesty and falsification of records, and clinical errors resulting in serious harm to patients.

She also defends at the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Social Work England and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, and her experience includes presenting cases on behalf of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, General Osteopathic Council, and General Optical Council.

Laura’s experience across coronial and regulatory proceedings enables her to approach professional discipline cases in a holistic manner and seek pragmatic solutions for clients.

Health & Safety

Laura acts for companies and individuals in both health & safety inquests and criminal and enforcement proceedings brought by local authorities and the Health & Safety Executive. Recent instructions include the representation of a local authority following the death of a pedestrian hit by a council-contracted vehicle at roadworks. Laura has extensive experience of representing and advising CQC registered care providers and in-depth knowledge of the issues which arise following incidents where residents are alleged to have been harmed because of unsafe or poor quality care.
