On 2 February 2026, a jury at the Central Criminal Court found Vladimir Motin, aged 59, guilty of gross negligence manslaughter. He was the Captain of the MV Solong, and on sole watch duty, when it collided with the Stena Immaculate, a tanker carrying aviation fuel. An able seaman, carrying out work at the bow of the Solong, died.
The prosecution called expert evidence and relied on breaches of the COLREGS (the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea), and other international standards.
Julia Faure Walker acted for the prosecution, and was led by Tom Little KC, instructed by CPS SCCTD.
