Brian O’Neill KC represents The FA in Ivan Toney betting case

Brian O’Neill KC represented The Football Association before a Regulatory Commission held in Wembley Stadium on 16 May 2023 in the case of the Brentford striker Mr Ivan Toney who had admitted 232 breaches of FA Rule E8 and was charged with Misconduct under FA Rule E1(b).

On 17 May the Members of the Regulatory Commission ordered that:

  • Mr Toney be immediately suspended for eight months which shall run up to and including 16 January 2024.
  • The first four months of this immediate suspension shall be from all football and football related activity which shall run up to and including 16 September 2023.
  • For the final four months of his suspension, effective from 17 September 2023 until 16 January 2024, he will be suspended from all football and football related activity excluding training with his football club
  • Mr Toney was also fined the sum of £50,000, warned as to his future conduct and ordered to pay the costs of the Regulatory Commission.
