Sallie Bennett-Jenkins QC won praise from Sandra Horley CBE, the Chief Executive Officer of Refuge. Refuge is the country’s largest single provider of specialist emergency accommodation and practical and emotional support to women and children escaping domestic violence.
Refuge were supporting SB, a deeply vulnerable woman, who was charged with offences of fraud; in unique circumstances, her co defendant, JL, had shot and killed both her mother and sister.
Sallie secured the admission of the co defendants bad character in the second trial of this issue; the first had ended abruptly following SB’s collapse. The application had been refused in the first trial.
Ms Horley praised Sallie for ‘giving SB a voice…’ and set out her thanks for what was described as ‘a brilliant job’. ‘Thank you for going the extra mile’ for the deeply vulnerable defendant.
Sallie was instructed by Shabeer Quereshi of Riley Hayes Solicitors.
