Orlando Pownall QC and Zubair Ahmad successfully defend murder suspect at the Central Criminal Court
Orlando Pownall QC and Zubair Ahmad successfully defended KM at the Central Criminal Court who was accused of the horrific murder of Hani El Kheir, a 16 year old, who was stabbed 33 times by 10 youths armed with knives and meat cleavers in 2013 in Pimlico. In 2014 five co-defendants were convicted at the Central Criminal Court of the murder of Hani.
KM, who denied involvement in the murder, was charged in 2015 as a result of advances in the evaluation of mixed DNA profiles which were not available at the time of the trial of the co-defendants.
The central evidence was the recovery from the handle of a murder weapon a mixed DNA profile indicating the presence of DNA from at least three individuals including KM. The DNA results were analysed by Cellmark Forensic Services using their recently introduced and evolving DNA mixture interpretation software “DNA Resolve” (also known as “likeLTD” and “LiRa”) which enables complex statistical evaluations to be performed on mixed DNA profiles.
Orlando and Zubair were instructed by Conrad Libischer of Edwards Duthie Solicitors.
