Crime
Julia has extensive Crown Court experience, both prosecution and defence. Trial successes include cases of fraud, money laundering, supply of drugs, firearms, serious violence and sexual offences, in all cases acting as a sole junior. She has advised in several complex fraud and money laundering cases.
Julia is regularly instructed in cases involving novel or complex legal issues. She appeared for the Crown, as sole junior, in one of the first successful Crown Court prosecutions to be brought under section 44 of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. In this particular case, care workers were accused of ill-treating an elderly resident who lacked mental capacity.
She is a Grade 2 prosecutor and on the C-panel of the SFO list.
Extradition
From September 2008 to January 2009, Julia was seconded to the Extradition Unit of the CPS Special Crime Division, where she gained invaluable experience in extradition and mutual legal assistance.
Julia acts for requesting states and requested persons at first instance and in appeals to the High Court. Recent instructions include cases of complex fraud and murder. She has successfully presented submissions on the validity of European Arrest Warrants, human rights, physical and mental condition, passage of time, double jeopardy and abuse of process.
Professional Discipline and Regulatory Proceedings
From September 2009 to March 2010, Julia was seconded to the Criminal and Regulatory Department of Kingsley Napley LLP, providing advice and advocacy services in proceedings before the Health Professions Council, the regulatory body for 15 healthcare professions. Her caseload included allegations against psychologists, radiographers, biomedical scientists, paramedics, prosthetists and chiropodists.
Julia has since appeared before the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the General Social Care Council. Her experience would make her a suitable choice of counsel in criminal and regulatory proceedings involving healthcare professionals.
