Cited as a leader at the bar in Chambers and Partners, in which he is described as a "smooth and persuasive advocate", Ian is a specialist criminal defence advocate with wide experience in cases which cover the full spectrum of criminal law and particularly those considered to be of a complex and serious nature.

His areas of practice include terrorism, murder, manslaughter, armed robberies and drugs as well as VAT frauds, serious fraud and money laundering. Amongst his notable back catalogue of cases are many which attracted significant media interest such as the Mardi Gras Bombers, Maria Thérèse Kouao [Victoria Climbié case] and the Charlton Athletic Football Club sabotage case.     He is a highly regarded advocate who brings to his client a wealth of expertise.

He is on the Attorney-General’s approved list of Special Counsel and as such appears in cases before the Special Immigration Appeals Commission.

Detail W was part of a group of individuals who sexually assaulted his children over a number of years. He was the principle defendant. The charges were of the grossest sexual behaviour with young children under the age of 11. All children of the family, male and female, were victims. The matter had already been subject to proceedings where the Crown had offered no evidence following legal argument. Concluded November 2008. These proceedings are now subject to appeal. Detail Operation Brindle. M was the sole defendant in the double murder of 2 Polish brothers. Following an afternoon drinking during a festival in Luton, the two brothers were beaten to death in their home. Concluded 2008.

Detail Operation Deliver. The Securitas robbery. Royle was one of the main defendants said to be involved in the planning and execution of the kidnapping of the manager of the Securitas depot and his wife and son and the subsequent raid on the Securitas depot. Detail A high cost case. R was the accountant in a £50,000,000 VAT fraud. He was said to be responsible for continuing the fraud once he had left the employment of the other defendants. The trial was stopped following a successful abuse of process argument.
