Professional Discipline

Healthcare Regulation: We are major suppliers of advocacy services and advice to the General Medical Council (GMC). We are instructed both directly by the GMC’s in-house legal team and through their external solicitors, and we also provide a panel of experts who are regularly instructed in serious professional discipline issues at the GMC or in the High Court.

We have also been instructed to represent the General Opthalmic Council in the High Court, and by the leading City regulatory departments and healthcare representative bodies to act for the defence before the GMC, the General Dental Council, the General Optical Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Health Professions Council and other healthcare tribunals.

Police Discipline: Chambers recognises the complexity and importance of the regulation of the police, whether by means of public proceedings, or through disciplinary action. The advocacy skills our practitioners have acquired in criminal proceedings, and our associated expertise in regulatory work before other tribunals, make us well placed to offer assistance in this field.

We have extensive experience in the conduct of a variety of proceedings which have application in the field of police law (e.g disciplinary proceedings, assault, misfeasance and corruption, sex offences and other specific criminal offences, firearms licensing, proceeds of crime, public inquiries, inquests, judicial review), and members are regularly instructed to appear before police disciplinary tribunals.

Football Association and Rugby Football Union: Both silks and juniors have advised and presented cases of note on behalf of the FA and the RFU including cases of financial irregularity, charges against sports agents, and successfully defending members of the England Rugby Team who were accused of sexual offences whilst on tour.

SRA and BSB Disciplinary Proceedings: A number of members are now instructed in cases before the Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal, and also act in presenting cases for members of the Bar before their regulatory body.
