Kate Bex

Kate Bex

Cited by The Legal 500 and Chambers UK as a leading junior, Kate is a highly regarded criminal advocate who both defends and prosecutes.  She specialises in serious and complex crime especially offences of murder, offences involving firearms and fraud/corruption.  Over the last six years Kate has also developed a Professional Discipline practice and she also represents the interests of those concerned in Inquests and Courts Martial.  Clients refer to Kate's "court room presence" and reputation for "strong advocacy based on thorough preparation" whilst being "cool under fire".  Importantly, recent praise includes the endorsement that "she commands the respect of judges".

PRACTICE

Crime and Fraud

Frequently instructed as leading counsel, solicitors have praised Kate's tactical approach referring to her "good feel for what works and what doesn't" and her "strong analytical ability".  Kate's recent cases include defending a mother who killed both her children whilst suffering a serious mental illness, prosecuting a seventeen year old for attempted murder of a rival gang member by stabbing him almost thirty times and defending a man accused of sexually assaulting eight women including children, in a campaign lasting fifteen years.

Kate is also an experienced Fraud practitioner and is currently instructed to prosecute money laundering offences arising from an alleged £40m Ponzi Fraud.  She has also successfully appeared for the defence in the Court of Appeal on a point of law concerning confiscation under both the CJA 1988 and POCA 2003 (a reported case).

Kate is a Grade Four prosecutor (the highest grade excluding Queen's Counsel) and has been on the Rape Panel of approved rape advocates for more than ten years.  She has successfully prosecuted many cases involving multiple victims of familial sexual abuse.

Inquests and Courts Martial

In the last twelve months Kate has represented a soldier at risk of being discharged from the Army, the partner of a Marine who died on return from active service in Afghanistan in an inquest in which the MOD's safeguarding policies were criticised and a General Practitioner who treated a teenage girl twelve hours before she died from a deep vein thrombosis.  Kate is currently instructed in a three-week Article 2 inquest, representing the family of a soldier shot during a training exercise and is well known for her client centred approach; "From the moment of our first meeting, Kate imbued us with confidence that she had a comprehensive knowledge of all the details and a clear strategy.  At the end of every day, Kate took the time and trouble to consult us on proceedings, to keep our spirits up and, with care, to manage our expectations."

Professional Discipline

Kate has appeared in over one hundred cases at the General Medical Council, including against a leading silk in a case involving a doctor who acted outside his area of expertise resulting in the death of several patients; a case which continues to attract national press interest.  Kate has appeared before the High Court for Judicial Review and in the County Court for the first ever appeal from a decision of the GMC's Registration Appeals Panel.  She has extensive experience of all forms of GMC proceedings, and has appeared before the interim orders panel, investigation committee and in fitness to practise hearings lasting up to several weeks.  Solicitors have praised her "detailed and persuasive advice" that is "to the point".

She is also in demand to defend those healthcare and other professionals who face criminal proceedings arising out of their work.

Kate has recently been instructed by the General Pharmaceutical Council as independent counsel to cross examine the complainant in a rape case where the registrant was unrepresented and therefore precluded from cross examining her himself.  Kate has also been sitting for several years as a Legal Assessor at the Health and Care Professions Council.

Mediation

Kate is also an accredited mediator for alternative dispute resolution of civil and commercial disputes and is an associate member of ADR Chambers.  Kate's experience of the mediation process makes her perfectly placed to act as a mediation advocate in civil asset recovery proceedings brought by SOCA.

Direct Access

Kate is authorised to accept instructions from members of the public in certain circumstances.  She also accepts instructions from in-house lawyers, licensed access clients, and authorised professionals.  More information on how to instruct Kate directly can be found here.
