Fiona Robertson
Fiona is currently practising in the Cayman Islands conducting criminal defence work. She has worked as a criminal attorney at Samson & McGrath since February 2012. The Cayman Islands has a fused profession so Fiona undertakes all litigation and preparation in her cases, as well as advocacy work. She has conduct of cases spanning the full spectrum of criminal offences.
Defence
Prior to February 2012 Fiona appeared almost exclusively in the Crown Court, defending a variety of offences including supply of drugs, assault and burglary. In August 2011 Fiona appeared in a successful appeal against sentence in the Court of Appeal which was later listed on Westlaw and cited on the Banks on Sentence Twitter page.
She was also regularly instructed in the Magistrates' Courts to defend in private cases and road traffic matters. She has particular expertise in matters concerning exceptional hardship arguments.
Prosecution
In addition to her defence practice Fiona has been instructed to act on behalf of the CPS, Serco and HMRC. In 2011 she completed a short secondment with the UK Border Agency branch of the CPS assisting on cases involving the importation of drugs and weapons to the UK.
Regulatory
Prior to working in the Cayman Islands Fiona gained experience of professional regulation work. She has assisted several members of chambers with written work for the General Medical Council, General Dental Council and the General Social Care Council (in relation to the "Baby P” case) as well as assisting with an advocacy workshop for the Royal College of Nursing. She has also been instructed in matters brought by the Nursing & Midwifery Council.
Other
Fiona completed Bar school in 2008, with an Outstanding result, for which she was given a prize from the Inner Temple. She was awarded the Inner Temple Sir Joseph Priestly Internship Scholarship for an internship she undertook in 2008 with the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative in Accra, Ghana. During this internship she was involved in co-ordinating public awareness projects on Freedom of Information, and undertook case work on human rights and sexual assault cases.
Fiona is an accomplished public speaker. She was selected to represent Durham University in the International Telder's Mooting Competition and reached the finals of the contest. She continued this success at Bar school, taking part in, and winning, an Inner Temple show case moot against students from Pepperdine Law School, USA. She was chosen from her year to represent the College of Law at the Inter-Providers Mock Trial Competition in 2008 and reached the finals of the College of Law Negotiation Competition
