Emma Burgess
Emma joined Chambers as a third-six pupil in October 2011 following completion of a twelve-month pupillage at One Paper Buildings.
Emma's current experience resides predominantly in criminal defence in both the Magistrates' Court and the Crown Court. Professional clients have found her to provide a service which goes ‘above and beyond', with her courtroom delivery being both ‘skillful and eloquent'.
Having been instructed in cases relating to the Anti-Social Behavior Act 2003, Emma also has experience of defending in closure order cases.
Emma has been instructed to prosecute on behalf of the National Probation Service. She has also assisted in delivering advocacy training to the Probation service in order to enable them to conduct contested breach proceedings on their own behalf.
Prior to commencing Pupillage Emma worked in Nepal with human rights NGO, Advocacy Forum. During her time there she led an investigation and submission to the United Nations Human Rights Committee which is currently in the process of consideration. This concerned the case of Subhadra Chaulagain, a 17 year old girl who was extra-judicially killed by the army after accusations by a local villager of being a guerrilla. She also assisted in editing a report on the torture of juveniles in custody which was launched by the Attorney General receiving excellent feedback from a worldwide audience.
