Jonathan Laidlaw QC Appears for the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF)
Jonathan Laidlaw QC is appearing for the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) in opposing the appeals of Valentine Balakhnichev (former Treasurer of the IAAF and former President of the All-Russia Athletic Federation (ARAF)), Alexei Melnikov (former Senior ARAF Coach) and Papa Massata Diack (former marketing consultant to the IAAF and the son of the then IAAF’s President). The Appellants are seeking, before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, to set aside findings that they were guilty of extorting monies in return for the suppression of doping sanctions against the Russian marathon runner, Liliya Shobukova. The hearing is expected to last until the end of the week with a decision to be announced in due course.
